Week #26 – “There’s always…BOWLING?!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Rob and I\u00a0got older and started palling around as adults…bowling became one of those things we could do together regardless of skill or conditions. \u00a0Raining at the beach…? \u00a0How about bowling! \u00a0Sub-zero temperatures up north? \u00a0Bowling! \u00a0Need something the entire family can do together?! \u00a0LET’S GO BOWLING!<\/p>\n

Rob always had a second and third contingency plan up his sleeve. \u00a0If the waves weren’t good, he’d take a walk on the boards. \u00a0If it was too windy for a walk, he’d go to the airport. \u00a0If the weather was bad, he’d go to the gym. \u00a0If he’d already worked out, he’d take a long drive instead. \u00a0Rob always had an arsenal of happy places at the ready…<\/p>\n

…what about you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bowling can teach us a lot about life…because none of us waits until conditions are perfect to jump in and take a turn. \u00a0We gather up anyone between the ages of 5 and 105 who can roll, push, bounce, or sling a ball down a lane and go…and just expect to have a good time! \u00a0Because (for most of us), bowling isn’t about the score…it’s about having that thing\u00a0we can do, with\u00a0people we enjoy, knowing we’ll have a good time. \u00a0I mean, seriously…when have you ever had a bad time bowling?!<\/p>\n

Your assignment for this week:<\/strong> Start building your arsenal of “Happy Places.” \u00a0Survey your family, your kids, your coworkers, your loved ones, your parents…find out what they like to do. \u00a0And don’t forget to make your own list, too! \u00a0Then look for common denominators. \u00a0Pitch-n-Putt? \u00a0Driving Range? \u00a0Amusement Park? \u00a0Beach Day? \u00a0Sleigh Riding? \u00a0Camping? \u00a0Long walks in the woods? \u00a0Picnic in the park? \u00a0Collect all your ideas in one place…so when you’re stumped for something to do or that first choice doesn’t pan out…”there’s always (fill in the blank)!”<\/p>\n

Years ago I got my family matching bowling shirts for Christmas. \u00a0We’ll use them again this weekend as we gather once more to spend time — not necessarily doing something we’re good at — just doing something fun together. \u00a0Rob will be missed…as always. \u00a0But his lessons…they are a new kind of happy place. \u00a0I hope they are for you, too!<\/p>\n
