Week #76 – Lose someone? \u00a0Tell me…”What was he\/she like?”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Greetings All — and Happy Friday!<\/p>\n

I had the chance to watch the movie ST. VINCENT with Bill Murray this week. \u00a0And this exchange stood out to me:<\/p>\n

Oliver: “Sorry, Vin, for your loss.”<\/em>
\nVincent: “Never understand why people say that.”<\/em>
\nOliver: “They don’t know what else to say.”<\/em>
\nVincent: “How about, What was she like? \u00a0Do you miss her? \u00a0Or, What are you gonna do now?”<\/em><\/p>\n

“What was she (or he) like?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Monday we had dinner with some people we haven’t seen in person in a few years. \u00a0Inevitably the question comes up: what have you been up to? \u00a0Inevitably, we fill in the events of the last year or so. \u00a0Inevitably, people are sorry for our loss.<\/p>\n

But this time…the young man at the table asked me a question:<\/p>\n

How do you do it? \u00a0How do you keep someone’s memory alive?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So I told him about the blog: how it started, what I set out to do, where it’s headed. \u00a0I was honest with him…I wasn’t sure who was reading it, if anyone, or for how much longer.<\/p>\n

“Just write. \u00a0Write for yourself. \u00a0To remember him.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

And it struck me that that was true. \u00a0So this week…I bring you a photo of Rob at a family wedding. \u00a0It was a fun wedding…a true celebration…with an awesome cocktail hour and dancing all night long. \u00a0There are endless stories to tell from this wedding…most notably of Rob getting his butt pinched by another male attendee!!! \u00a0To him…it remained a compliment of the highest order! \u00a0And we laughed about it many times since. \u00a0A single moment…a most precious memory. \u00a0A shocking good time was had by all!!!<\/p>\n

Your Challenge for the Week Ahead: “What was he\/she like?”<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Chances are you’ll encounter someone this week who has suffered a loss. \u00a0Our first instinct (and mine too, believe me!) is to apologize…to say we are sorry. \u00a0And we are…but maybe we can go further. \u00a0Ask a follow-up question: What was he\/she like? \u00a0Were you close? \u00a0Do you miss him\/her? \u00a0(I’m sure there are others.) \u00a0I often hear people say, I’m sorry to ask about him. \u00a0And my immediate reply is always the same: don’t be sorry…I love to talk about him!<\/p>\n

Remember your loved ones…and help someone this week remember theirs!<\/p>\n
